Summary of the proposed Action : The need for the action
Despite the introduction of orthodox medicine from the Western World and the Far East and, today, the National Health Insurance Scheme to ease medical finance, Ghanaians continue and will continue to rely on the alternative medicine herbal medicine. The need is about:
  • The unconventional herbal clinical practice, and
  • The poor public perception of traditional healing
  • The proposed solution to the identified need
    The Action proposes to:

  • Enhance the clinical practice of the herbal medicine practitioners, and
  • Correct the poor image that the generality of Ghanaians have about the profession
  • The implementation plan
    The Implementation will cover a period of one year (12 months) involving:

  • Meeting of Committee members to commission medical experts to prepare a good practices document for herbal clinical practice
  • Preparation of Manual of Herbal Medicine Practice by the medical experts and adoption by the Association to guide practitioners after the necessary training
  • Service Provider will help among other activities in preparing proposals for negotiations with the Ghana Health Service/Traditional Medicine Practice Council to help in formal training programmes, and with the
  • Committee members will design messages with the help of Service Provider to appear on radio talk shows aimed at removing the poor perception of Ghanaians towards herbal medicine
  • The expected impact of the advocacy action.
  • Conventional diagnosis of patients and safer prescription of drugs
  • Decongestion of public hospitals which are faced with shortages of medical personnel and facilities
